Teaching for Mastery and SEND: Designing Inclusive, High-Impact Primary Mathematics
Summary
These sessions aim to support teachers to understand how Teaching for Mastery (TfM) principles provide a powerful, inclusive framework for meeting the needs of pupils with SEND. Drawing on current Maths Hub and NCETM guidance, the sessions explore how mastery pedagogy is “inclusive by design” for whole class teaching, and how adaptive planning, calm environments, and predictable routines support learners with commonly occurring needs in mainstream classrooms. Teachers will examine the Five Big Ideas through a SEND lens, analyse predictable barriers, and practise designing tasks that maintain mathematical ambition while reducing cognitive load. The sessions blend research, exemplification, collaborative task design, and practical classroom strategies to strengthen teachers’ confidence in planning and delivering maths that enables all pupils to thrive.
